Rand Rides his Lowracer

Recently moved to Bakersfield, CA and have found the roads quite different from Oregon. Climbs here tend to be long and gradual where as in Oregon short and steeper are more the norm. EIther the roads are wider or the drivers more courteous cause there is a noticable difference in the room vehicles give a bicycle.

There is also a 31 mile bike path that for the most part is ideal for lowracer recumbent bikes as it is very level and smooth paved. the last eight miles of the West end of the path go through a wilderness area bounding with wildlife that always give viewing enjoyment for long training rides.

Rand, I have a vk2 with tiller steering (previously had a tour easy and ryan vanguard), I noticed you have the ubar set up...how do you like it? Did you try the tiller? Nice GRR, does it climb better than your vk2? Your times are amazing! Love to hear from you. Michael.

Hey Michael,

A pleasure to hear from another VK2 rider. I choose the "U bar steering", mostly because a friend, John Williams, (Rocketman) who had years of lowrider experience said it was better for starting and stopping on hills. Have never ridding one with tiller steering but would like to try it.

The GRR climbs much netter than the VK2, believe mine has too much flex in boom causing loss of energy transfer.

Are you Sloji on the Bikejournal.com? If not there is another VK2 in SLO.

The bike would be amazingly fast once the frame is stiffened.

There is a 30 mile bike path here that is perfect for testing the lowracer on, flat and no traffic.

Rand, yes, I am sloji on bike journal. Just got back from a morning ride today, my longest yet 45 miles. Passed numbers of upright doing 18-19 mph, I must have been doing 22 or so. On the flats the vk is very fast for me. I am 170, soon to be 162, and would like to see what I can do on a bike like this. My bike is not flexy at all, very stiff, transfers power well. Today was my best ride yet, felt great. My email
is sloji@yahoo.com, let's plan a ride.

Rand, was just curious, with the miles you put in, are you retired or are you riding from the Rio Bravo area to Southwest Bakersfield and back daily plus your weekend rides?

Hey Bill,

I am on the far North East side of Bakersfield. Usually Tuesday and Thursday I ride a thirty mile loop with the fast group on the Rattlesnake loop or the Pesos Creek loop, then I ride the bike path to Enos Lane and back.

Wednesday and Friday is usually Woody Loop or Round Mountain Loop plus all or part of bike path.

Weekends can be Arvin Loop, at least once a month I will ride up Breckenridge Road to the top, this is one of my favorite rides here.

Have ridden to Lake Isabella and lke that quite a bit too, the riders here thought I was local to do ride on that highway.

I do as many time trials as I can, and also the century and double century rides. AM learning the hotels sell out early the weekend of Century ride.

Am not retired, I average 62 miles a day with a 71 mile plus ride length average.

Reduced my riding by over 6,000 miles last year from the previous. After this year I will probably cut back and focus on making some money again.

Dry Raods,

rand
